When Elliot Costello traveled to Cambodia with a group of friends, he met a young girl named Thea.
Elliot had no idea that this meeting would change his life in such a big way, leading to a movement aimed at stopping sexual abuse against kids.
Thea was known for always having colorful nail polish on her little nails. One day, while she was talking with Elliot, she asked if she could paint one of his nails. He happily said yes because he enjoyed talking to her. However, during their conversation, he found out that she had been a victim of sexual abuse in the past.
Elliot said, “While she was painting one of my nails, I promised her that I would always keep it like that to remember her and the pain she went through.”
Elliot was inspired to work towards making a positive difference for men, hoping to reduce the number of children who become victims of sexual abuse.
That’s when he created the #PolishedMan movement, where guys paint one of their nails with nail polish. That single nail stands for the one in five kids who will experience sexual violence.
Polished Man is dedicated to stopping sexual violence against kids. The organization explains that being a Polished Man involves standing up against violent actions and words, whether in your community or around the world.
Elliot thinks that because men are behind 96% of the violence against children around the world, they need to be the ones to help make a difference if we want to stop the abuse of innocent kids.
The purpose of painting nails isn’t only to raise awareness about the many children who face abuse every day, but also to spark discussions about this important issue. This can help generate new ideas for preventing abuse. Additionally, he wishes that people will begin to contribute to “educational programs and resources for children who have survived abuse,” according to APlus.
We really want to see more guys, especially famous ones, get involved in this movement.
